Aye Write! Schools Programme

The Mitchell Library will again host a fantastic free schools programme for Aye Write! 2012, which is sure to inspire Glasgow’s young readers for many years to come.

Over 12,000 schoolchildren will get the chance to meet the very best of today’s authors, illustrators and storytellers. As well as our regular favourites such as Theresa Breslin and Cathy MacPhail, we look forward to welcoming the ever zany Philip ‘Beardy’ Ardagh, ‘Blue Peter Book of The Year’ award-winner Ali Sparkes and - all the way from California - the hugely popular writer for teenagers, Michael Grant.

The school’s programme kicks off with S1 and 2 pupils from across Glasgow performing their own poetry at the Youth Poetry Slam – a dynamic combination of drama, presentation and public speaking. An audience of peers cheer on contestants in an exuberant fast paced final.

Other highlights include Allan Burnett - author of the acclaimed And All That… Scottish history biographies and author Andy Briggs talks about Tarzan: The Greystoke Legacy, his thrilling 21st Century update of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic as it celebrates its centenary year.
There are also ideas for classroom/Curriculum for Excellence- related activities, CPD sessions for teachers and a wonderful programme of events for nursery children and children with additional support needs.

Our extensive programme is a real celebration of the wonderful world of children’s literature and highlights the positive role of reading and library membership in supporting the targets of educational attainment in the city.
