Trevor Royle and Stephen McGinty

Scotland and the Second World War

In his latest book, A Time of Tyrants, based on previously unseen archives, military historian Trevor Royle examines Scotland’s role in the Second World War. The country became a social melting pot with the arrival of European refugees, and was hugely important as an industrial power house and the nation’s larder. The war also had a major impact on politics. On 10 May 1941 Rudolph Hess, then the Deputy Fuhrer, parachuted over Renfrewshire on a mission to broker a peace deal with the British government. Stephen McGinty’s Camp Z: The Secret Life of Rudolf Hess pieces together a riveting account of the claustrophobia, paranoia and high-stakes gamesmanship being played out during Hess’ subsequent interrogation by British intelligence officers.
