William McIlvanney was born in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. He studied at Kilmarnock Academy and later at the University of Glasgow. His novels include Laidlaw (considered by some to be the first book of the genre known as ‘Tartan Noir’), Docherty (which won the Whitbread Award for Fiction), The Papers of Tony Veitch, The Big Man (which was made into a film starring Liam Neeson), Strange Loyalties and The Kiln (which won the Saltire Society Scottish Book of the Year Award). He has also published a volume of short stories, Walking Wounded, books of poetry and a collection of essays and journalism, Surviving the Shipwreck. He lives in Glasgow.
