StAnza 2012 will take place over five days from 14th to 18th March, more than 90 events in atmospheric venues around the historic town centre of St Andrews which was recently shortlisted for a Creative Place award, with the Byre Theatre, Scotland’s only 5-star arts venue, as the festival hub. With themes this year of The Image and Poetry by Degrees, the programme features a stunning line-up of headline poets such as Kathleen Jamie, Christopher Reid, and Chase Twichell from the US joining poets from Samoa, Jamaica, Canada, Palestine and across Europe to participate in a diverse range of readings, performances, installations, talks and conversations.
As ever there will also be visual art, film, music and drama, this year with actors David Hayman and Karen Dunbar, a children’s programme, and participation activities. New events for 2012 range from an all-day workshop at the home of the artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham to afternoon tea and poetry with Jackie Kay.
There will be a focus on film and TV-related poetry; and an avant-garde strand in poetry will feature the Dutch acclaimed text composer, Rozalie Hirs, a leading champion of new poetics in the UK, Keston Sutherland, sound installations from Holly Pester, Filmpoem, a cross-arts collaboration of film, poetry and live music from Scottish poet and film-maker Alastair Cook, and films from Icelandic and Swedish conceptual poets.
