Murray Pittock 'Road to Independence'

Murray Pittock works at the University of Glasgow, and has previously held posts at the universities of Manchester, Strathclyde, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Oxford, and visiting appointments at the universities of Yale, Auburn and the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies, University of Wales. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the English Association, the Royal Historical Society, the Royal Society of Arts and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. Murray's books are set on courses in Literature, History, Scottish and Irish Studies, theology and politics in leading universities in around twenty countries, and he has been awarded or shortlisted for a number of literary and historical prizes and prize lectureships. His books on Scottish history and identity include Celtic Identity and the British Image (1999), Scottish Nationality (2001) and A New History of Scotland (2003). The Road to Independence examines the history, culture, society and economy of Scotland within the UK since 1960, and asks whether the major changes that have taken place in both Scottish and British politics and identity make it possible for the two to continue to co-exist without further major change.
