Vitali Vitaliev defected from the Soviet Union 20 years ago. Known as ‘Clive James’s man in Moscow’ and star of Have I Got News For You, he is the author of Dreams on Hitler's Couch as well as being a columnist for many national and international newspapers and magazines. In Life as a Literary Device, Vitaliev offers a glimpse into how literature has affected his life and how his experiences can be used as a survival manual for the Western world, a way of life much removed from that lived in the USSR (indeed, he argues that life in the West is in many ways harsher than life under the Soviet regime). Highly entertaining, Life as a Literary Device is also a serious study on the power of literature.
