Arthur Ransome is best remembered as the author of Swallows and Amazons but before this he was caught up in the Russian revolution spending three crucial years as the Communist’s main propagandist in the West. Roland Chambers discusses his life of Ransome under Communism, The Last Englishman, with Rachel Polonsky, author of Molotov's Magic Lantern: A Journey in Russian History. Living in Russia, Polonsky explores the library of one of Stalin's ruthless henchman Vyacheslav Molotov. His library (and his magic lantern) leads to an exploration of Russia and its history, visiting cities and landscapes, encountering the spirit of great artists and the terrible past of a country ravaged by war, famine, and totalitarianism.
