About Clare Maclean
Clare Maclean (1955-2006)
The prize commemorates the life of Glaswegian Clare Maclean, who taught creative writing and was herself passionate about reading. Clare read broadly and imaginatively and loved to talk to friends and students about what she was reading.
According to her partner Mike Gonzalez, Clare was "an extraordinary reader. This prize in her name will encourage future lovers of reading, just as she encouraged those around her to share her passion".
Mike is joined on the judging panel by Rob Maslen and Rosemary Goring, Literary Editor of The Herald. Rosemary knew Clare as a liberating and inspirational presence and considers that: "The prize is an appropriate award for such a champion of literary talent. In honouring the place of books in Clare's life with this prize, we ensure her own story continues".
