Any Human Heart by William Boyd

In Any Human Heart we read the posthumous diaries of Logan Gonzago Mountstuart - half-British and half- Uruguayan - as he develops from school, through adulthood into old age and, ultimately, to oblivion. Mountstuart is from wealthy stock and, as a child, money has never been an obstacle. He expects success in everything he does and in his early years he is not disappointed. He does well at school, gets a place at Oxford, writes with some degree of success and associates with names that will grace the pages of history. At the same time, Mountstuart has the freedom to gallivant around the UK, Europe and the world, taking more than a passing interest in policing, the Spanish Civil War and the Duke of Windsor.

Read this book!!

Please read this book! I loved it and read it from start to finish in a day as I couldn’t put it down. It is funny and engaging and I found it occupied my thoughts for weeks afterwards. I would love to hear what other people think.

Jennifer O'Neill

This is one of my favourite books of all time -I love the way the story is told through Logan Mountstuart's diaries, filled with real people and events -he is a ridiculous namedropper -and yet it's all fiction. I saw William Boyd at the first two Aye Writes- why isn't he here this year? Please bring him back next year.

A Complex Life and a Wonderful Read

William Boyd's greatest success here is the way he manages to recreate time and place. These "diaries" feel very real and each page comes alive with authenticity.
